German record label Asphalt Tango Records recently released Balkan Brass Battle, a musical battle between two of Europe’s leading Gipsy brass bands – Boban Markovic Orkestar and Fanfare Ciocarlia. The result is a 13 track album which includes original compositions as well as covers of famous songs, one of which is I Am A Gummy Bear (The Gummy Bear Song), done in the traditional Balkan Brass style.

About Boban Markovic Orekestar:
The quintessential Balkan brass band from Vladicin Han, in Southern Serbia, has once again captured the mantle of “Leading Band in Serbia,” a title for which they have been crowned many times since the late 1980’s. Their music, performed by a thirteen-piece strong orchestra, is wholly defined by their own gypsy lineage, whilst giving a knowing nod towards other musical and cultural backgrounds closely related to Romani traditions.

About Fanfare Ciocarlia:
Zece Prajini (literally meaning ‘ten fields’) is a village of just four hundred souls, surrounded by gentle mountains and dusty tracks. Situated in the East of Romania, it is no more than a stone’s throw from the border with the former Soviet republic of Moldavia. In the evenings, when the winds calm down, the sounds of the fanfare echo from the surrounding slopes. This is the home of the twelve Gypsy musicians who make up the FANFARE CIOCARLIA brass ensemble – winner of the BBC 3 Planet Award 2006.
